The fifth season of The CW’s The Flash (2018–2019) took the fastest man alive into uncharted territory, shifting focus from speedster showdowns to a deeply emotional, family-driven narrative. Centered around the unexpected arrival of Barry and Iris's daughter from the future, Nora West-Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy), Season 5 blended the trials of parenthood with a tense, high-stakes battle against a villain uniquely designed to take down metahumans: Cicada.
The main issue was pacing. Cicada wasn't a mastermind like Thawne or a physical juggernaut like Zoom. He was a blue-collar worker with a grudge and a dagger. The formula quickly became repetitive: Team Flash finds a meta, Cicada shows up, drains their powers, and escapes. The character lacked the charisma of previous big bads. the flash 5 season
It is a season of extremes. The domestic storylines involving Barry, Iris, and Nora are some of the best character work the show has ever done. The exploration of legacy, destiny, and the weight of the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" looming over Barry's head was compelling storytelling.
Barry’s Season 5 suit (the chinstrap/cowl combo) is widely considered his best live-action suit yet—sleek, comic-accurate, and practical. The action sequences also improve, with creative uses of speed (time remnants, lightning throwing) and the tension of Cicada’s dagger shutting down powers mid-fight. The Flash Season 5, Episode 22
Television Review: The Flash, season 5 - A Rambling Reviewer
It’s a running joke in the Arrowverse that the longer a show runs, the harder it is to keep the stakes feeling real. By the time The Flash rolled around for its fifth season, Barry Allen had already fought speed gods, evil speedsters from Earth-2, and a samurai robot. So, when the showrunners promised a villain who wasn’t a speedster but was "impossible to catch," fans were intrigued. Wikipedia The Flash Season 5 Villain: Who is Cicada
Barry and Nora travel back in time, revisiting key moments from previous seasons to assemble a device to stop Cicada.
Watching Barry learn to be a father while still essentially being a "kid" himself was charming. Similarly, seeing Iris struggle with the revelation that in the future, she kept Nora in the dark about her father's heroic legacy provided great material for Danielle Panabaker (who even directed an episode this season). Nora’s infectious "XS" enthusiasm was a great counterbalance to Barry’s more seasoned, weary attitude.
