Set in a fictional Gujarati village where guns are sold like vegetables, the story revolves around two rival clans: the Saneras and the Rajadis. Into this blood-soaked landscape enter Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone). He is a Rajadi; she is a Sanera. They fall in love at first sight during the festival of Holi, but their romance is doomed by centuries of hatred between their families. What follows is a tale of love, betrayal, separation, and inevitable tragedy.

: Box Office India, Filmfare archives, contemporary reviews from The Hindu , Rediff , BBC , and the Central Board of Film Certification public statements.

The film’s weaknesses are narrative. The middle act drags, and the supporting characters (barring Supriya Pathak) are caricatures. However, the electric chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone elevates the material. Singh’s Ram is a revelation—a brooding, almost feral hero—and Padukone matches him with a regal, fiery presence.

★★★★☆ (4/5)

This film belongs entirely to Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. This was the film that solidified them as the premier on-screen pair of their generation.
