The Ertl amputation offers several advantages compared to traditional amputation techniques:

Named after the Hungarian surgeon Károly Ertl who developed it in the mid-20th century, this procedure is designed to create a more stable and functional residual limb (stump).

: By locking the fibula to the tibia, the procedure prevents "balloting" (unstable movement) of the fibula, which can be a significant source of pain in traditional amputations.
