The film serves as a prequel to the original Annabelle . Set in 1955, it follows doll-maker Samuel Mullins and his wife, Esther, who open their home to a nun and six girls from a shuttered orphanage. Twelve years prior, the Mullins lost their daughter, Bee, in a tragic accident. The couple allows the orphans to stay, but tragedy strikes when one of the girls, Janice, is drawn to a forbidden room containing a doll locked in a closet. The entity attached to the doll is revealed to be a demon seeking a human host, leading to a night of terror for the inhabitants of the house.
