The series is based on Fauna Hodel’s memoir, One Day She’ll Darken: The Mysterious Beginnings of Fauna Hodel . Raised in a Black family in Nevada, Fauna grew up believing she was biracial. As a teenager in 1965, she discovers that her birth mother, , was a white woman from a wealthy Los Angeles family.
