If you have a cut end of a log, pour a little water on it. If the water beads up and rolls off, the pores are closed (it might still be wet inside, but the surface is dry). If the water soaks in immediately, the wood is thirsty and likely very dry. Look at the ends of the logs

Fact: Kiln-dried wood at 8% MC will re-absorb moisture from humid air or rain within days. Always cover the top, leave sides open.
