The rise of OTT platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime, ZEE5, Sony LIV) has been the single most important factor in the growth of the Hindi zombie genre. Mainstream Bollywood studios have largely avoided zombie films, fearing box office failure due to the required budget for VFX and the lack of a “family audience.” Streaming, however, rewards niche content. This has led to a small but steady stream of zombie content, including the animated series Dead (2020) and the horror-comedy Chhorii (2021), which, while primarily about a witch, features zombie-like possessed figures.

On the other hand, Netflix’s Betaal (2020), created by Patrick Graham, attempted to fuse the zombie genre with colonial-era folklore. In this series, British colonial officers who were executed by a tribal leader centuries ago rise as undead “betaal” (a Sanskrit term for a malevolent spirit) to terrorize a village and a squad of modern soldiers. The concept was innovative—zombies as symbols of colonial guilt and tribal resistance. However, the execution was widely criticized for its slow pacing, wooden dialogue, and overreliance on tropes from World War Z and 28 Days Later . Betaal revealed the central tension of the Hindi zombie film: it cannot simply copy Western templates; it must find a visual and narrative language that feels rooted. When it does (as in Zombivli ), it soars; when it doesn’s, it stumbles.

Before 2013, zombies in Hindi cinema were either cameos in anthology horror films or laughable special effects in low-budget B-movies. The real birth of the genre came with Raj & DK’s Go Goa Gone , a film audaciously marketed as “India’s first zombie-comedy.” The film follows three lazy, hedonistic young men (played by Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, and Vir Das) who travel to Goa for a rave party, only to find that a Russian mobster’s synthetic drug has turned the partygoers into ravenous zombies. zombie movies hindi

The "Zombie Movies Hindi" category is still in its nascent stage compared to Hollywood or South Korean cinema. However, the rise of streaming platforms (OTT) has given creators the freedom to experiment with higher budgets and bloodier practical effects. With a growing audience hungry for high-concept genre films, the Indian undead are only just beginning to rise.

For decades, Indian horror was synonymous with the gothic ruins and vengeful spirits of the Ramsay Brothers era. However, the modern zombie—a creature of infection rather than superstition—didn't truly arrive until the 21st century. Filmmakers began to realize that the global obsession with the apocalypse could be localized by tapping into India’s dense urban landscapes and bureaucratic ironies.
