Chiyo is the "crown" (the rider on top) for the girls' team. Kiyoshi is the horse for the boys' team. During the brutal fight, Kiyoshi does something that horrifies Chiyo: he to win the match. This is a devastating moment for her innocent worldview. She cannot reconcile the kind boy she loved with the one who would assault her so crudely.

This is the turning point for Chiyo. To settle the conflict between the boys and girls, a massive "Cavalry Battle" (a three-legged race on piggyback) is held. The prize: the boys get to watch the girls' school trip video (implying nudity), and the girls get to expel the boys.

They first meet when Kiyoshi discovers Chiyo trying to practice sumo wrestling moves on a tree. Sumo serves as a bonding point for the two; Kiyoshi feigns a deep interest in the sport to get closer to her. While the relationship begins with Kiyoshi hiding his true nature (and his status as a prisoner) to impress her, Chiyo develops genuine feelings for him.

A defining trait of Chiyo is her passion for sumo wrestling. In a school obsessed with strict order and social status, Chiyo’s hobby is considered unconventional.

Unlike many of her female classmates, Chiyo does not harbor a deep-seated hatred for boys. She is characterized by her sweet and gentle demeanor, often acting as a moral compass or a "ray of hope" for the male students. Her defining trait is her obsession with sumo wrestling, a passion that leads her to meet and drives much of the initial plot. This is a devastating moment for her innocent worldview

Chiyo first notices Kiyoshi when she sees him attempting to dig a tunnel out of the prison (to escape and go on a date with the ultra-sadistic vice-president, Hana Midorikawa—a secret Kiyoshi is desperate to keep). Chiyo misinterprets his exhausted, dirty, and desperate state as a sign of a "hardworking, misunderstood boy." She projects her romantic ideals onto him, seeing him as a modern-day Jean Valjean (from Les Misérables ). She begins secretly helping him, bringing him food and water.

During the Sports Festival arc, Chiyo’s character is tested. She is forced to reconcile her feelings for Kiyoshi with the ongoing war between the boys and the Student Councils. Her loyalty to Kiyoshi eventually strains her relationship with Mari, marking a significant turning point where she asserts her own values over her sister's influence.
