The second and longest phase is the , which is itself subdivided into a series of internal pasos known as the Convivencias (Retreats). Unlike traditional Catholic education, which focuses on doctrine alone, the Catechumenate step is existential. Over approximately two to four years, the community gathers weekly for the “Echo of the Word.” Here, the community listens to the Bible (first the Old Testament, then the New) and shares how that specific passage judges, illuminates, or encourages their current life. The crucial pasos within this phase are the Convivencias : the three-day retreats of self-examination ( examen de conciencia ), the delivery of the Traditio (the handing over of the Creed and the Our Father), and the ritual of the Scrutinies .
