Every movement in a great film must be motivated. This applies to both characters and the camera itself. A character shouldn't just walk across a room unless they have a reason to; similarly, a camera shouldn't pan or zoom unless it is following an action or revealing new information. When a camera move is "unmotivated," it reminds the audience that they are watching a movie, breaking the immersion. By ensuring every frame has a purpose, filmmakers maintain the "cinematic dream."
