At the age of 12, she suffered a leg injury while dancing on the side of a train, forcing her to give up her passion for dance competitions. Her parents, Alma and Frederick Kappelhoff, encouraged her to pursue music. She began singing at local dance halls and soon formed a band, The Young Topers. After changing her name to Doris Day and replacing her band's name to The Coast Serenaders, their popularity grew, but she eventually dropped the band to pursue a solo career in acting.
