In the mid-1970s, Cambodia was plunged into one of the darkest periods in its history. The Khmer Rouge, a communist organization led by Pol Pot, seized power in 1975 and began implementing radical policies aimed at transforming the country into a self-sufficient agrarian society. However, this utopian vision quickly turned into a nightmare, as the regime's brutal methods led to the deaths of an estimated 1.7 to 2.2 million people, out of a population of approximately 8 million, due to executions, forced labor, starvation, and disease.

One of the most notorious sites of these atrocities was the S-21 prison camp, located in Siem Reap, a province in northwestern Cambodia. Established in 1975, S-21, also known as Tuol Sleng, was originally a high school that was converted into a prison and interrogation center. Over the course of its operation, an estimated 20,000 people were imprisoned there, with only a handful surviving. As Cambodia continues to rebuild and move forward,
