However, the image of sword-wielding sailors on sailing ships has been replaced by a much more dangerous reality. Modern pirates are often well-organized, heavily armed criminal syndicates utilizing advanced technology to hijack vessels, kidnap crew members for ransom, and siphon cargo.

While global piracy incidents have seen a decline in recent years compared to peaks in the early 2010s, specific regions remain high-risk. The nature of the crime has shifted from opportunistic theft to violent kidnapping and sophisticated oil theft.

The fight against piracy is currently a stalemate: international naval presence and private security keep the numbers "manageable," but until the root causes of poverty and lawlessness in coastal states are addressed, piracy will remain a permanent fixture of the maritime industry.
