Even after India gained independence in 1947 and became a Republic, the Tamil Nadu Police retained the Royal Crown in their crest. This was a decision rooted in tradition. While many other Indian police organizations switched to the "Ashoka Lion Capital" (the National Emblem) immediately, the Tamil Nadu Police petitioned to keep their historic crest. The Government of India granted permission to retain the old badge, allowing the force to preserve its unique colonial-era heritage.
