A collocation is a sequence of words that co-occur more often than would be expected by chance. Linguists distinguish between (e.g., “interested in,” “by accident”) and lexical collocations (e.g., “commit a crime,” “bitterly disappointed”). Collocations exist on a spectrum from fixed expressions (“by the way”) to more flexible pairings (“take a walk / have a walk” depending on dialect).
