The film opens with legendary Death Race champion Carl Lucas (Luke Goss) finally winning his freedom from the corrupt Terminal Island prison. However, his freedom is short-lived. A powerful and ruthless South African arms dealer, Niles York (Dougray Scott), buys the Death Race franchise and moves its operations to the Kalahari Desert.
