He scrambled forward, his knees sinking into the soft, rotten wood. He grabbed the walkie-talkie. The plastic was cold, but the speaker hummed with Mike’s voice.
Silence. Then, a choked gasp. “Will? Where are you? The signal is bouncing off a weird frequency—are you in the storm cellar?”

In the final episodes of the season, the group faces off against the Demogorgon in a thrilling showdown. Eleven uses her powers to help close the portal to the Upside Down, and Will is finally rescued.
He whispered into the walkie-talkie. “Mike. It’s me.”
Inside the shed, the air was thick with ash. His dad’s old workbench was warped, slick with black slime. And there, on the floor, was a kid’s walkie-talkie. Not his. It was too clean. The antenna was bent, and the red light blinked on . Will dropped the radio

As the story progresses, it is revealed that Will has been taken to a dark and alternate dimension, known as the Upside Down. The Upside Down is a twisted and terrifying version of Hawkins, where monsters and supernatural creatures roam free.
Visually and aurally, the first season is a triumph of atmosphere. The synth-heavy score by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the band Survive provided the perfect pulse for the show’s tension. The production design—from the wood-paneled basements to the flickering Christmas lights Joyce uses to communicate with Will—created a sense of "used" nostalgia that felt authentic rather than parodied. He had been in the Upside Down for what felt like years, though the chimes on the broken clock tower outside Mirkwood never moved past 8:15. His fingers, raw and trembling, clutched the shotgun he'd found in a rotting patrol car. It wasn't loaded. The Demogorgon didn't know that.
Eleven, who has a troubled past and has been subjected to experiments at the laboratory, is initially hesitant to trust others. However, she forms a bond with Mike and his friends, and they help her evade the government agents who are searching for her.
The shed door exploded inward. The Demogorgon didn’t roar. It simply unfolded, a petal of pale flesh and a blossom of teeth. The walkie-talkie squealed.
The group soon discovers that Eleven has the ability to communicate with Will through a sort of telepathic connection. They use this connection to try and locate Will and bring him back to the real world.
