ଚାଳିଶା ଶବ୍ଦର ଅର୍ଥ ହେଉଛି 'ଚାଳିଶ ପଦ' ବା 'ଚାଳିଶଟି ଚରଣ'। ଦୁର୍ଗା ଚାଳିଶା ମା’ ଦୁର୍ଗାଙ୍କ ସ୍ତୁତିଗାନ। ଏହା ଏକ ଭକ୍ତିପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ କବିତା ଯାହା ମା’ଙ୍କର ବିଭିନ୍ନ ରୂପ, ମହିମା, ଶକ୍ତି ଏବଂ ଦୈତ୍ୟ ଦାନବ ବିନାଶ କାହାଣୀକୁ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରିଥାଏ। ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଭାଷାରେ ଏହି ଚାଳିଶା ପାଠ କଲାବେଳେ ଭକ୍ତମାନେ ମା’ଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଏକ ଆତ୍ମୀୟ ସମ୍ପର୍କ ଅନୁଭବ କରନ୍ତି। ଏହା ମୁଖ୍ୟତଃ ମନ୍ତ୍ରମୟ ଶ୍ଳୋକମାନଙ୍କର ସମାହାର, ଯାହା ପାଠ କରିବା ଦ୍ୱାରା ମନୁଷ୍ୟର ମନରେ ସକାରାତ୍ମକ ଶକ୍ତିର ପ୍ରବାହ ହୁଏ ବୋଲି ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରାଯାଏ।
