Dell Function Key Lock Official
Are you trying to adjust your volume or brightness, but hitting the keys just opens the Action Center or Settings app instead? Or conversely, do you want to use the F1-F12 keys without holding down the Fn key?
On Dell laptops, the top row of keys (F1–F12) can perform two different actions: dell function key lock
For permanent control, especially on external Dell keyboards or older models: Are you trying to adjust your volume or

| Issue | Solution | |-------|----------| | Fn + Esc does nothing | Try holding Fn for 2 seconds, then press Esc . Update BIOS from Dell Support site. | | Fn Lock resets after reboot | Change the setting permanently in BIOS (Function Key Behavior). | | External keyboard not responding | Most external keyboards don’t support Fn Lock; use built‑in laptop keyboard. | | No on‑screen notification | The feature still works; check behavior by pressing a volume or F‑key. |
Some external Dell USB keyboards also support Fn Lock via Fn + Esc .
