HyperTerminal wasn’t actually created by Microsoft. It was a licensed piece of software from a company called Hilgraeve. Microsoft included a "lite" version of it in Windows for years because, back in the dial-up days, people needed a way to connect to BBSs (Bulletin Board Systems) and transfer files.
