Park Chan-wook’s 2016 psychological thriller The Handmaiden is widely considered a modern masterpiece, but many fans are unaware that a significantly longer version exists. The (often mislabeled as the Director's Cut) adds approximately 23 minutes of footage to the original theatrical release, bringing the total runtime to 168 minutes.

As Sook-hee becomes more comfortable in her new role, she begins to develop feelings for Lady Hideko, and the two women start a romantic relationship. However, things become complicated when Sook-hee realizes that Lady Hideko is not as naive as she seems, and that she may have her own agenda.

The Count visits, pretending to be a tutor. Sook-hee passes him notes about Hideko’s schedule. But at night, Hideko teaches Sook-hee to read Japanese—their fingers brush over forbidden shunga prints. Hideko confesses she dreams of drowning in a lake. Sook-hee dreams of stealing her and running away—but which plan is the real one?

Final shot: the box opens. Inside is not gold, but a dried camellia—the first flower Sook-hee ever gave Hideko. They laugh. For the first time, free.
